        • Christmas

        • Christmas is the most widely celebrated festival world over, and also the most popular festival globally. We have tried to present you with not only the history of Christmas, but also enjoyable information on the different icons that we associate with Christmas. In fact, these things have become so common with the celebration of Christmas, that when we see the Santa riding on a reindeer sledge with the stocking full of gifts and candies, or the familiar coniferous green trees being decorated with tinsels and stars, and gingerbread and fruits, or houses being decorated with holly twigs and mistletoes - we know Christmas has come. For, these are what Christmas mean to us, at least symbolically. Let us take a look at what they really mean and their association with Christmas.

          How did Christmas start?

Since about 400 AD, Christians have celebrated the birth of Jesus. 'Christ' means 'Messiah' or 'Anointed One' - the title given to Jesus - and 'Mass' was a religious festival.

In the West today, the real meaning of Christmas is often forgotten. It has become a non-religious holiday! More children believe in Father Christmas than in Jesus. Christmas Day is a time for eating and drinking too much and watching television.

But the real Christmas story is found in the Christian Bible. It is told in two different books: Matthew and Luke chapters 1 and 2. If you have no Bible, you can read these chapters online. You may think that the story of the birth of Jesus, and the way that the West celebrates Christmas today, do not seem to have many connections.

          Mary says "yes"
          Mary & Joseph on journey

These chapters tell how Jesus was born as a baby to Mary. This was no ordinary birth! She was not married, she was a virgin, (yes, really!) and an angel had told her she would bear a special baby. Her husband-to-be, Joseph, did not believe her at first. Who would? Then an angel told him in a dream that it was true! Probably no one else believed it. So when they had to travel from their home in Nazareth to Bethlehem (near Jerusalem), to register their names with the ruling Roman government, they probably escaped many hard words from other people.

NativityArrival in Bethlehem brought worry and upset: there was no room for them to stay at the hotel. There was only space in the stable - the animal house for travellers' donkeys and horses.

Jesus was born that night, and as they had no bed for him, they used an animal feeding box filled with the dry grass the animals ate

          Christmas Prayers

The festival of Christmas is celebrated with fun as well as religious fervor. People would pray to the Almighty for health, wealth and prosperity for them and their loved ones. A number of traditions are followed, which mark the celebrations of the festival. Churches across the globe conduct special prayers in the midnight of Christmas Eve, to commemorate the birth of Lord Jesus Christ. As a part of the customs, Christians chant prayers before every meal, and following the ritual during Christmas becomes even more important. In the article, we have given some of the common prayers for Christmas.

Loving Father, Help us remember the birth of Jesus,
That we may share in the song of the angels,
          The gladness of the shepherds,
And worship of the wise men.

          Close the door of hate
And open the door of love all over the world.
Let kindness come with every gift
And good desires with every greeting.
Deliver us from evil by the blessing, which Christ brings
And teach us to be merry with clear hearts.

May the Christmas morning make us
          Happy to be thy children
          And Christmas evening bring us
To our beds with grateful thoughts
          Forgiving and forgiven
          For Jesus sake
          Amen.

          Christmas Trees

          xmas traditions

In 16th-century Germany fir trees were decorated, both indoors and out, with apples, roses, gilded candies, and colored paper. In the Middle Ages, a popular religous play depicted the story of Adam and Eve's expulsion from the Garden of Eden.

A fir tree hung with apples was used to symbolize the Garden of Eden -- the Paradise Tree. The play ended with the prophecy of a saviour coming, and so was often performed during the Advent season.

It is held that Protestant reformer Martin Luther first adorned trees with light. While coming home one December evening, the beauty of the stars shining through the branches of a fir inspired him to recreate the effect by placing candles on the branches of a small fir tree inside his home

The Christmas Tree was brought to England by Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert from his native Germany. The famous Illustrated News etching in 1848, featuring the Royal Family of Victoria, Albert and their children gathered around a Christmas tree in Windsor Castle, popularized the tree throughout Victorian England. Brought to America by the Pennsylvania Germans, the Christmas tree became by the late 19th century.

http://www.allthingschristmas.com/pics/xmas-cards.jpgA form of Christmas card began in England first when young boys practiced their writing skills by creating Christmas greetings for their parents, but it is Sir Henry Cole who is credited with creating the first real Christmas card. The first director of London's Victoria and Albert Museum, Sir Henry found himself too busy in the Christmas season of 1843 to compose individual Christmas greetings for his friends.

He commissioned artist John Calcott Horsley for the illustration. The card featured three panels, with the center panel depicting a family enjoying Christmas festivities and the card was inscribed with the message "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You."

          Christmas Stockings

          http://www.allthingschristmas.com/pics/christmas-stocking.jpg

According to legend, a kindly nobleman grew despondent over the death of his beloved wife and foolishly squandered his fortune. This left his three young daughters without dowries and thus facing a life o fspinsterhood.

The generous St. Nicholas, hearing of the girls' plight, set forth to help. Wishing to remain anonymous, he rode his white horse by the nobleman's house and threw three small pouches of gold coins down the chimney where they were fortuitously captured by the stockings the young women had hung by the fireplace to dry. Christmas Carol

Popular Christmas carols symbolize everything that Christmas stands for: They gather the family, bring joy, spread the word about Christmas, and make everyone feel the Christmas spirit. Try to hum the melody of “Jingle Bells”, and most people in the northern hemisphere will immediately imagine seeing snowflakes, angels, and Christmas bells.

          SILENT NIGHT

          Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright,
Round yon virgin mother and child,
Holy infant so tender and mild,
          Sleep in heavenly peace,
          Sleep in heavenly peace.

          Silent night, holy night,

          Shepherds quake at the sight,

          Glories stream from heaven afar,

          Heavenly hosts sing alleluia;

          Christ the Savior, is born!

          Christ the Savior, is born!

          Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love's pure light,
Radiant beams from thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
          Jesus, Lord, at thy birth,
          Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

          Prawn cocktail 'à la mode'

Use a mixture of king prawns and smaller prawns for the maximum texture and taste in this classic starter.

          2. Main
          Roast turkey with bread sauce
          Roast turkey with bread sauce

You'll need a large piece of butter muslin (available from good cook shops or fabric shops) for this most classic of Christmas recipes.

          3. Trimmings
Gratin of Brussels sprouts with lardons, cream and almonds
Gratin of Brussels sprouts with lardons, cream and almonds

You won't hear any protests at this sprouts dish - almonds, double cream, bacon and parmesan make for a luscious accompaniment for traditional turkey.

          Dessert
          Christmas pudding
          Christmas pudding

This really is a figgy pudding as it includes dried figs, as well as all the usual dried fruit. The fig seeds bring a hint of a crunch to the finished pudding, which makes for a first-rate texture. Make and steam it at least a month in advance, so that it has time to mature.

May this Christmas be bright and cheerful and may the New Year begin on a prosperous note!
